A Brief History of The Turtle (and the rest of the world)

1976-  The Concorde supersonic transport flies for the first time, Apple Computers are born and a great idea is hatched ! The Greene Turtle lands on the beach and finds a home on 116th Street in Ocean City, Maryland. It’s a cozy place where folks can relax with friends and make a few new ones. (Since it’s lasted longer than the Concorde, it must have been a good idea.)

1986- The Greene Turtle finally opens its second location (It only took ten years!), this time in the historic Fells Point area of Baltimore. And the denizens of Charm City discover the joys of a gentle aquatic reptile. Fortunately, they receive no fallout from the little nuclear disaster in Chernobyl.

1990- Slowly but surely, The Turtle crawls south. Fun-loving suburbanites gather for the opening in Laurel, Maryland, unaware of the worldwide web, which has just been invented.

1998- Two Turtles open in Maryland: one in in Edgewater and another in West Ocean City. Is this becoming a habit, or is it just some crazy Maryland thing, like pickin’ blue crabs?   How will people find their nearest Turtle? Not to worry: Google has just been founded.

2002- Go-o-o-o-oal! Brazil wins soccer’s World Cup! Meanwhile, the Greene Turtle Franchising Corporation comes out of its shell to help The Turtle spread its special formula of food, fun, sports, and spirits throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. We repeat: go-o-o-o-o-oal!

2004
- The first two Turtle franchises opens their doors in Towson and Salisbury, Maryland. And still Turtle-hungry Marylanders clamor for more. Congratulations to the folks in Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, who have just joined the European Union. We’ll try to get you your own Greene Turtles real soon.

2006- Scientists find the fossil of a 375-million-year-old fish that may be the missing link between fish and land animals. Marylanders in Mt. Airy, Columbia, La Plata and Pocomoke discover brand new Greene Turtle franchise locations, the missing link between not-so-much-fun and lots-of-fun.

2007- The Turtle crosses the Maryland border to open up in DC at the Verizon Center, and then back again to occupy Frederick and Bel Air. And, oh yeah, lots of other stuff happened in the world. But who really cares? The Turtle is coming to a location near you!
